Reincarnation: Been There Done That

Reincarnation: Been There Done That

It all began late one Friday night as I attended the monthly Langtrees VIP Champion Blogger awards at the chocolate factory in Burswood. Skolling the bubbly generously provided initially in excited anticipation of winning the damn thing for the first time ever and then as the announcements were made to drown my sorrows of coming 4th – again! I admit that by evenings end as we were ushered out, I was somewhat worse for wear.

Once again Amanda O had won 1st prize from the People’s Choice votes. Not that she didn’t richly deserve it, but 12 months in a row, Oh the humanity! Once again Master Yoda and Barbie had tied for 2nd. To rub salt into the gaping wound I was beaten into 4th by Anonymous and so once again out of the prizes.

I was so upset that I climbed up the wall onto the brothel roof like a pissed spiderman determined to end it all and had to be talked down by the duty Madam Hurricane Tracey. Sulkily refusing the offer of a free taxi ride home, I stormed off in a zig zag manner to the nearest bridge and sat alone under its concrete span in the dark thinking about what had just happened. I wondered if I had actually jumped off the roof would I have been reincarnated.

I laughed as I recalled the funny English comedian Gary Delaney’s joke about reincarnation. He reckoned that when people thought that they had died and told others later that they had been drawn down a dark tunnel toward a bright light, that they had in fact already been reincarnated as a moth.

But then as I settled in, onto the somewhat suspiciously stained memory foam mattress that some kind soul had left under the bridge, I began to think about reincarnation more seriously. Reaching for my pay as you go mobile, I used some of the last precious data to google the word. Turns out that Meta AI advises that - Reincarnation, also known as rebirth or transmigration, is the belief that a person's soul or non-physical essence begins a new life in a different physical form after death. It's a concept found in various religions and philosophies, suggesting that the soul continues its journey of spiritual development through multiple lifetimes.

Several religions, primarily of Eastern origin, incorporate reincarnation into their belief systems. These include Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. Additionally, some smaller religious movements and mystical sects, as well as certain indigenous African traditions like the Venda, also hold beliefs in reincarnation.

Being a Catholic I immediately thought of Jesus but remembered that his Easter act of rising from the dead was a resurrection and not a reincarnation as he came back as himself.

As I mused swatting away the mozzies I recalled a great song by the Highwaymen. A superstar musical American group put together in 1985 with Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash each singing a verse in turn. Their signature song is one that follows one souls journey reincarnated each time that the main actor dies and is worth repeating.

Willie Nelson sang:

Highwaymen - Music Credit: You Tube - Image Credit: Rolling Stone

I was a highwayman
Along the coach roads, I did ride
With sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost her baubles to my trade
Many a soldier shed his lifeblood on my blade
The bastards hung me in the spring of twenty-five
But I am still alive

Kris Kristofferson sang:

I was a sailor
I was borne upon the tide
And with the sea, I did abide
I sailed a schooner round the Horn to Mexico
I went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow
And when the yards broke off they said that I got killed
But I am living still

Waylon Jennings sang:

I was a dam builder
Across the river deep and wide
Where steel and water did collide
A place called Boulder on the wild Colorado
I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound
But I am still around
I'll always be around and around and around and around and around and around

Johnny Cash sang:

I fly a starship
Across the Universe divide
And when I reach the other side
I'll find a place to rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a highwayman again
Or I may simply be a single drop of rain
But I will remain
I'll be back again and again and again and again and again and again

Humming the tune, I thought about my own personal experience of past lives. I went once to a soothsayer healer in the Perth hills. She laid hands on me and spoke in tongues and then suddenly startled as if shocked. “They are telling me that in a past life you were a Viking Warrior” she said. “They are telling me you were berserk, but I don’t know what they mean” she said and brought the session to a close. Driving away I giggled at that one believing that all of my antecedents were mainly from England with some Irish and Scottish also.

It was years later that I had my DNA done just for fun (not as the result of an unsolved homicide in case you were wondering). Bloody Hell there it was. With 61% of me English and northwest Europe, 25% Irish 2% Scottish and 9% German I was gob smacked to see that I also had 2% DNA from Iceland! Although the Vikings were mainly from Scandinavia history it shows that some settled in Iceland.

There was no question. I had been a Viking warrior in the past life and clearly it followed that I must have  acted in a berserk manner as me and my hairy mates pillaged coastal villages.  (I just knew that my specialty in Viking skills would only relate to pillage and that there was no way known that I did that other thing Vikings are accused of).

Just before I fell asleep that night I wondered about the human soul. It did seem conceivable to this Viking Warrior that the soul…the intelligence of a being might not die when the physical body did and might well then continue on in another physical being, a human, a lion, or a drop of water. It all made perfect sense. Mind you I was still under the weather from the Moet as well as under the bridge.

What would you want to come back as if reincarnation was an actual thing and you had a choice…a moth?

“Oh Magnum you are too kind, but seriously, if I were to come back I would want to be a feared and revered Orca or Great White - firstly because of my love for the water and secondly, they are protected. Or maybe a mermaid haha”
